Clinical Nurse to Legal Nurse Consultant Opportunities

This presentation will describe the pathways 2 RN’s took towards becoming Independent Legal Nurse consultants doing merit case reviews, and expert witness work. It will highlight some of the fundamental aspects of business ownership as well as provide some basic resources for someone just thinking about becoming a legal nurse. This can be tailored to Includes educational and business resources, sample cases and reports.
In this presentation:
- The learner will have an understanding of at least 2 paths to becoming an LNC.
- Learners will be able to list 5 important skills/traits to be a successful LNC.
- Participants will gain knowledge of 3 education resources for LNC training.
Jane Shufro, BSN, RN, CPAN is a clinically active board certified Post Anesthesia nurse at the Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital, Boston, Massachusetts. She has over 30 years of diverse critical care experience including cardiac surgical ICU, cardiac catheterization lab, and as nurse manager in a plastic surgery office. Jane is an independent legal nurse and is the owner of Legal Nurse Collaborative, where she has been consulting with attorneys, insurance firms, and other legal nurses on both plaintiff and defense medical-related legal cases. She serves as an expert in cases requiring surgical anesthesia, sedation and monitoring, pain management and rapid response or code events.
Jane is a member of AALNC, and serves as the Southern New England Chapter Treasurer. She has been published in the MASPAN Mayflower, a chapter newsletter from the Massachusetts American Society of Perianesthesia Nurses, where she was recipient of “Article of the Year” in 2009.
Lisa Mancuso, BSN, RN, PCCN, CCRN, CLCP, LNCC has been a staff nurse in Boston since 1983. Her clinical focus is cardiology, nephrology, and progressive care nursing. She is a past recipient of the Massachusetts Nurses’ Association Award for Excellence in Nursing Practice. Lisa is also a member of the Informatics Core Team for the Steward Healthcare Network. This ongoing project involves the design, build, and implementation of the network’s electronic medical record, including end-user training and “Go Live” support.
Ms. Mancuso is the owner of Mancuso Medical Legal Consulting (www.mancusomedlegal.com). She provides analysis of medical issues for attorneys in such areas as medical practice, personal injury, and immigration. She is also a certified life care planner. Lisa has served as the President and Education chairperson for the Southern New England Chapter of the American Association of Legal Nurse Consultants since 2014. She is also the chairperson of the Products and Services Committee for the American Association of Legal Nurse Consultants.
